Operational meaning

Ledger Currency inside enterprise finance operations.

In enterprise ERP systems, the ledger currency (also called the local currency or base currency in some systems) is the currency in which the primary set of books is maintained. Foreign currency balances — held in accounts denominated in currencies other than the ledger currency — must be converted to the ledger currency through revaluation at period end. The ledger currency governs how the trial balance is produced.

Position in Chain

Ledger currency is State 05 of the CCY State Chain. It is the first state at which the full trial balance of the entity is expressed. Foreign currency account balances enter here through revaluation.

Why it matters

Ledger Currency as a control concept

The ledger currency is the institutional container for all account balances. Errors in account currency configuration at State 04 propagate into incorrect ledger currency balances at State 05, creating revaluation errors, trial balance mismatches, and downstream reporting distortion.

Risk if misunderstood

Where misunderstanding creates distortion

Confusion between ledger currency and reporting currency, or between ledger currency and functional currency, leads to incorrect revaluation procedures and misstatement of account balances in the financial statements.

Distinctions

Do not confuse this term with adjacent currency identities.

Ledger currency hosts systemic balances while reporting currency frames outward narratives; consolidation currency lifts those narratives across entities.
