Reference Definition

What Transaction Currency means inside enterprise finance.

Transaction currency is the currency in which a financial event — a sale, purchase, loan, payment, or other exchange — is denominated at the time it occurs. It is the currency of the obligation created by the transaction.

Operational meaning

Transaction Currency inside enterprise finance operations.

Inside enterprise accounting systems, every financial transaction is recorded with a transaction currency. When the transaction currency differs from the account currency or ledger currency, a foreign currency transaction has occurred. The difference must be recognized, tracked, and resolved — either through settlement, revaluation, or translation.

Position in Chain

Transaction currency is State 02 of the CCY State Chain. It is the first state at which an accounting obligation exists. The rate is locked at transaction date. The obligation is measurable. Accounting begins.

Why it matters

Transaction Currency as a control concept

Transaction currency determines the currency identity of an accounting obligation. When it diverges from settlement currency or account currency, FX consequences follow. Governing transaction currency clearly is the foundation of multi-currency accounting control.

Risk if misunderstood

Where misunderstanding creates distortion

Confusing transaction currency with account currency or settlement currency leads to incorrect FX gain/loss recognition, reconciliation failures, and misstatement of foreign currency balances.

Distinctions

Do not confuse this term with adjacent currency identities.

Transaction currency names the obligation; account currency assigns custody inside books; settlement currency names the cash rail that moves. Ledger currency is still downstream.

Custody question

In which currency does this counterparty measure legal performance of receivable or payable?
